Accountability Taught Me Before the Courtroom Ever Did

For a long time, I thought accountability was mostly about consequences.

You do something wrong.

You get caught.

You admit it.

You deal with whatever comes next.

That is part of accountability.

I do not think it is the most important part anymore.

Because somebody can admit what they did, serve whatever punishment comes with it, say they are sorry, and then go right back to doing the same thing.

Nothing really changed.

To me, accountability is not just admitting that you were wrong.

It is admitting you were wrong and then changing the pattern that got you there.

Maybe not overnight.

Maybe not perfectly.

But there has to be effort.

There has to be movement.

Otherwise, you are not really taking accountability.

You are just surviving consequences.

I have plenty that belongs to me

There are a lot of things from my younger years that I can look back on now and say:

That was on me.

Not maybe.

Not sort of.

Mine.

There were times when I blamed circumstances.

Times when I blamed the people around me.

Sometimes my mistake really was trusting the wrong person.

Letting the wrong person into my house.

Keeping the wrong people around me.

Being somewhere I had no business being.

I used to look at situations like that and think:

I did not actually do the thing, so how is that my fault?

I understand it differently now.

Maybe I did not do everything I was blamed for.

But I made the judgment call.

I opened the door.

I chose the environment.

I kept people around who were not helping me become the person I said I wanted to be.

That part is mine.

And learning to separate those things has been important.

You can be unfairly blamed for one part of a situation and still be accountable for another.

Both things can be true.

Accountability stopped feeling like punishment when I started using it

I think accountability feels like punishment when all you can see is what it costs you.

The embarrassment.

The consequences.

The loss.

The lecture.

The damage.

The thing you wish never happened.

But if you are honest enough, there comes a point where you can use it.

Something that made you weaker can become something you stand on.

You take the mistake.

You look at it.

You figure out how you got there.

Then you build differently.

That changed accountability for me.

Instead of constantly asking:

Why is this happening to me?

You start asking:

What can I do with this?

What do I need to change?

Where did I go wrong?

How do I make sure I do not keep doing this?

That does not mean picking yourself apart every second of every day.

I am already too good at that.

It means having some checks and balances inside yourself.

Being honest.

Because you can lie to a lot of people.

You can make excuses to a lot of people.

But if you get good enough at lying to yourself, you are in real trouble.

If you cannot admit the problem exists, you cannot fix it.

Reasons are not excuses

I understand why I became some of the person I was.

That is different from excusing it.

Environment matters.

Childhood matters.

Pain matters.

Trauma matters.

Who you are surrounded by matters.

All of those things can explain behavior.

But explanation and permission are not the same thing.

I think when you grow up around dysfunction, dysfunction can start feeling normal.

Trauma can become the reason for everything.

That is just how we are.

That is just how my family is.

That is just how I react.

That is just what happened to me.

And if nobody ever interrupts that pattern, it keeps moving.

Generation after generation.

At some point, somebody has to be the difficult one.

The one who changes.

The one who pulls away.

The one who says:

No.

This stops here.

That person might make people angry.

They might be misunderstood.

They might be treated like they are the problem because they stopped participating in something everyone else had accepted.

Do it anyway.

A teacher once gave me a quote about excuses that stayed with me for years.

“Excuses build monuments to nothing. Those who specialize in them are seldom good at anything else.”

I still hear that in my head when I catch myself reaching for one.

So now I try to do something different.

Do not turn the reason into an excuse.

Turn the excuse into a reason.

You know why you struggle with this?

Good.

Now what are you going to do about it?

Shame and accountability are not the same thing

I think people confuse these constantly.

Shame says:

You did something bad, therefore you are bad.

Accountability says:

You did something wrong. What are you going to do now?

Those are not the same thing.

Shame can make somebody hide.

Accountability asks them to face it.

Shame can keep somebody frozen inside a mistake for years.

Accountability gives the mistake somewhere to go.

You own it.

You learn.

You repair what you can.

You change.

Then you keep living.

I have carried embarrassment and shame for things that belonged to me.

I have also felt shame over versions of myself that I did not recognize and things I did not believe were mine to own.

That taught me something important.

You should be willing to own everything that is yours.

But you should not confuse being willing to take accountability with accepting every accusation somebody puts in front of you.

That is not growth.

That is surrendering your own understanding of the truth.

An apology without effort becomes another pattern

I think words can become hollow very quickly.

“I’m sorry.”

“I love you.”

“I promise.”

Those words matter.

But the action behind them matters more.

If somebody keeps hurting you in the exact same way and every time they say:

Well, I apologized.

At some point, the apology is not repairing anything.

It is becoming part of the cycle.

A real apology should change something.

Maybe slowly.

Maybe imperfectly.

But there should be effort.

If I hurt you and I genuinely regret it, I should want to understand how I hurt you.

I should want to avoid doing it again.

I should want my behavior to eventually make the apology believable.

That is what accountability looks like to me.

Not perfect behavior.

Changed direction.

Parenthood made consequences real

Before I became a father, a lot of my consequences felt like mine.

I got in trouble.

I dealt with it.

Whatever.

I did not really understand reputation.

I did not fully understand how choices follow you.

Then I had a child.

Suddenly my actions did not end with me.

My choices could affect her.

My reputation could affect her.

The way I behaved could affect what people thought about my family.

The things I did could change what I was able to provide, where I could be, and what kind of life I could help build.

That changed everything.

I wanted to become somebody my daughter could be proud of.

Somebody my family could point to without embarrassment.

I wish I had understood that earlier.

I did not.

And I have not been perfect since.

But there is something I am proud of.

Every year I have been a parent, I believe I have become better than the year before.

Maybe not as fast as I wish.

Maybe not as cleanly as somebody else would have wanted.

But better.

My children have watched me grow.

They have watched me get knocked down.

They have watched me keep going.

That matters to me.

Consequences mattered when they stopped belonging only to me

When I was younger, I could be the fall guy and barely care.

There were stupid situations where I got blamed for something and I would almost shrug.

Whatever.

I did not understand the weight of it.

I did not understand that allowing yourself to constantly be placed in bad situations creates a reputation whether you think it is fair or not.

Then fatherhood changed the equation.

Consequences mattered because somebody else could feel them.

That is when accountability became much more serious to me.

Your life is not just your life anymore.

Your child might live with the fallout from decisions they never made.

That is a different kind of responsibility.

The hardest lesson was learning what not to own

I do not think admitting when I am wrong has ever been the hardest part for me.

If I am wrong, show me.

Seriously.

Correct me.

I like being corrected when the correction is honest.

Because if I am wrong and somebody shows me where, then I am not wrong anymore.

They just patched a hole in my knowledge.

Thank you.

Where I struggle is when I am asked to own something that I do not believe is mine.

That is different.

There is a strange kind of demoralization in being willing to admit your real mistakes while feeling like people are waiting for you to admit to something else too.

Something you cannot honestly say you did.

And sometimes your refusal to accept that becomes its own evidence against you.

See?

He will not admit it.

But how do you honestly take accountability for something you do not believe is true?

You cannot.

At some point, you have to learn to let people have their version.

That does not make it yours.

It means you stop destroying yourself trying to force somebody else to return it.

The courtroom did not teach me accountability

Honestly, the courtroom was not where I learned accountability.

Life taught me accountability.

Consequences taught me.

Fatherhood taught me.

Relationships taught me.

My own conscience taught me.

The courtroom taught me something different.

It taught me that systems are human.

They are built by people.

Operated by people.

Argued inside by people.

And people bring their own limitations, relationships, perceptions, resources, and experiences with them.

That does not make systems meaningless.

It means systems need safeguards.

Checks.

Balances.

Honesty.

Transparency.

Rights that matter even when somebody is unpopular.

The courtroom did not introduce me to responsibility.

By the time I ever had to think seriously about accountability in that environment, life had already been teaching me the lesson for years.

Sometimes brutally.

People can change because I know I did

I absolutely believe people can change.

I have to.

I am proof of it.

That does not mean somebody wakes up one morning and becomes a completely different person.

Change is usually uglier than that.

It is trying.

Failing.

Catching yourself.

Trying again.

Getting something right.

Getting something else wrong.

Moving forward.

Slipping.

Moving forward again.

People need a reason.

Sometimes it is themselves.

Sometimes it is a child.

A partner.

A future they want.

A moment where they finally realize:

I cannot keep doing this.

Then they need honesty.

Because wanting change without being honest about what needs to change is not going to get you very far.

And people trying to change need something else too.

Grace.

Not infinite permission to keep hurting people.

Grace.

There is a difference.

Somebody can be struggling and still deserve encouragement for trying.

A person can be one percent better this year.

Then another percent.

Then another.

That is still movement.

We should probably spend more time encouraging people who are genuinely climbing and less time standing above them explaining how easy we think the mountain should be.

A troubled past does not make growth fake

I think people sometimes see somebody with a troubled past make another mistake and immediately decide:

See?

They never changed.

I do not think that is fair.

Especially when the person is genuinely trying.

People who grew up with stability sometimes do not understand what growth looks like when somebody starts much further behind.

Different environment.

Different money.

Different mental health.

Different family.

Different opportunities.

Different tools.

Different starting line.

That does not remove personal responsibility.

It just adds context.

I have tremendous respect for people who come out of situations where statistics say they probably should not have made it.

People who build something from dirt.

People who break cycles.

People who become softer after growing up around hardness.

People who keep trying when nobody expects much from them.

That is real growth.

And real growth is rarely a movie ending.

It is raw.

It goes up and down.

It takes time.

I stopped disliking people just because they disliked me

There is something I would absolutely handle differently today than I did years ago.

I used to dislike somebody because I knew they disliked me.

Simple as that.

You do not like me?

Fine.

I do not like you either.

Now I understand something I did not understand then.

Sometimes somebody dislikes a version of you that is not actually you.

They are angry at somebody who exists in their head.

Why would I spend my energy hating them back?

I can protect myself.

I can be cautious.

I can keep distance.

But I do not need to join their war.

Especially if they are aiming at somebody who does not exist.

Sometimes that realization is almost peaceful.

You do not like me?

Okay.

Maybe if you knew me, you would.

Maybe we would have actually gotten along.

Maybe we could have built something cool together.

Maybe not.

Either way:

I am sorry things ended up that way.

Have a good day.

And I am going to keep moving.

I will tell my children the truth about my mistakes

If my kids ever ask about my past, I do not want to hide it.

I do not want to make the bad decisions sound fun either.

I want to use them.

Here is what I did.

Here is what happened.

Here is what it cost.

Here is what I learned.

One of the biggest lessons I want them to understand is how important the people around them are.

Who you let into your life matters.

Who you trust matters.

Who you spend your time with matters.

Find people who lift you when you fall.

Not people who make the hole deeper.

Find the person who says:

Hey.

Leave that alone.

We are moving forward.

Those people can change your life.

And when you find them, be that person for them too.

I want my kids to know it is okay to be wrong

I hope my kids see how I respond when I am wrong.

I want them to know being corrected is not humiliation.

It is information.

If I have something wrong, show me.

Now I know more than I did five minutes ago.

That is a win.

The important part is what comes after the mistake.

What did you do with it?

Did you fix it?

Did you learn?

Did you change?

Did you apologize?

Did you make the same choice tomorrow?

Being wrong does not make you stupid.

Making a mistake does not make you a bad person.

Refusing to learn from it is where the problem starts.

Admit it before you build a life around hiding it

If somebody is terrified that admitting one mistake means they are a terrible person forever, I would tell them:

Just own it.

The sooner you do, the sooner you can do something with it.

You cannot grow around something you refuse to acknowledge.

Take accountability.

Then let your actions afterward say who you are.

Let the pattern speak.

If somebody still wants to freeze you at your worst moment, that is their choice.

You do not have to stay there with them.

There will be other people.

People who appreciate the work.

People who see the difference.

People who love you.

Keep going.

What I would tell the younger version of me

If I could sit across from myself before fatherhood, before a lot of the consequences, before I understood any of this, I think I would tell him:

You can run from accountability for a while.

You can shrug.

You can blame circumstances.

You can say you do not care.

But eventually it catches up.

And when it does, you may look at somebody you love and wish you had started sooner.

So start now.

Think about your future self.

Is what you are doing today actually helping that person become who you say you want to be?

If the people around you cannot see your dream, that does not automatically mean the dream is wrong.

But take accountability for that too.

Trust yourself enough to build it.

Choose better people.

Make better decisions.

Own what you break.

Fix what you can.

Learn faster.

Do it before you lose time you cannot get back.

And understand something I wish more people understood:

Accountability is not admitting that you are a bad person.

It is believing you are capable of becoming a better one.

Own what is yours.

Change what needs changing.

Give other people grace while they are trying to do the same.

And have enough respect for yourself to leave behind the shame that was never yours to carry.

Because accountability was never supposed to keep you on the ground.

It is supposed to help you get back up.

For a long time, I thought accountability was mostly
