Over the years, I have dabbled in poetry, short stories, music, and anything else that gave me a place to put thoughts that did not always fit neatly anywhere else.

To me, writing has always been an art.

The same way I see photography as an art.

You can point a camera at something everyone has seen a hundred times and, somehow, capture it in a way that makes someone stop and look at it differently.

Words can do that too.

They can take something ordinary, painful, confusing, beautiful, or difficult and give it shape.

They can help you see something that was already there.

Maybe that is part of why I started writing here.

I wanted somewhere to put some of the things I have learned.

Somewhere to make sense of some of the things I have lived through.

Somewhere to create again.

And maybe, somewhere along the way, leave a little light on for somebody who needs it.

Words have always mattered to me

I have benefited from other people’s words my entire life.

Some helped me.

Some hurt me.

Some were spoken directly to me.

Some I read.

Some came from songs, books, conversations, or things I stumbled across at exactly the right moment.

And some of the words that hurt me the most were not even said to me.

They were said to other people.

That taught me something about words long before I ever sat down to write these blogs.

They travel.

They stay.

They can reach places the person speaking them may never see.

A few words can give someone courage.

They can make someone feel understood.

They can change the direction of a terrible day.

They can also damage a relationship, destroy trust, shape an opinion, or stay inside somebody’s head for years.

Words matter.

I think that is one reason I take writing seriously.

Once you put words into the world, you do not always know where they are going to land.

You do not know who is going to find them.

You do not know what kind of day that person is having.

You do not know what they are carrying.

That makes writing feel like more than just filling a page.

At least it does to me.

Writing has always been an outlet

There are things that are difficult to explain while you are living through them.

Sometimes you are too angry.

Sometimes you are too hurt.

Sometimes you do not even understand what you are feeling yet.

Sometimes there are twenty different thoughts happening at the same time and none of them make sense until you slow down enough to put them somewhere.

Writing does that for me.

It makes me slow down.

It helps me process.

It helps me understand.

It helps me move forward.

There is something powerful about taking everything that feels enormous inside your head and putting it onto a piece of paper.

Suddenly, you can see it.

It is still real.

It still happened.

It may still hurt.

But now it is sitting there in front of you.

Contained.

Words on a page.

And sometimes you realize that is all it has to be if you let it.

Writing can make pain real without giving it permission to keep hurting you.

I have found a lot of peace in that.

Not because writing erases anything.

It does not.

But sometimes understanding something is the first step toward deciding what place it is going to have in the rest of your life.

Some things need somewhere to go

I think pain becomes dangerous when it has nowhere to go.

Anger too.

Fear.

Shame.

Grief.

Confusion.

If you keep everything bottled up long enough, eventually it starts coming out somewhere.

Maybe in your relationships.

Maybe in your reactions.

Maybe in the way you talk to yourself.

Maybe in decisions you would not normally make.

Everybody needs somewhere healthy to put the things they carry.

For me, one of those places has always been writing.

I can be honest on a page.

I can say something ugly and stare at it.

I can admit something scares me.

I can acknowledge that something hurt.

I can recognize where I was wrong.

I can separate what happened from what I want to do about it.

That distinction has become increasingly important to me.

Because something happening to you does not automatically decide what happens next.

There is still a choice there.

Maybe not about what happened.

But about what you become afterward.

Part of this is for me

I want to be clear about something.

I am not writing because I think I have everything figured out.

I am not building some polished version of myself and trying to convince everybody that I have always been this person.

If you have read anything else I have written here, you already know that is not the case.

I have made mistakes.

I have made decisions I regret.

I have reacted badly.

I have been angry.

I have had times in my life when I was nowhere near the man I wanted to become.

I know I am not perfect.

But I also know I am a good person.

And I know I have worked hard to become better than some of the versions of myself that came before this one.

Writing about that is partly for me.

It is one way I take some of my strength back.

It is one way I stop seeing myself only through the things that have happened to me.

For a long time, pain can make you feel like your entire identity is something that happened.

Something someone did.

Something you lost.

Something you survived.

At some point, I did not want to live that way anymore.

I do not want to spend my life as a victim of anything.

That does not mean pretending painful things were not painful.

It does not mean rewriting history.

It means deciding they do not get to own everything that comes after them.

For me, writing is one of the ways I turn pain into something I can use instead of something that only uses me.

But I hope somebody else finds it too

Even though this writing is personal, I know I am not the only person who has struggled.

Far from it.

There is somebody recovering from addiction right now who cannot imagine what their life looks like five years from today.

There is somebody coming home from incarceration wondering whether anybody will ever see them as more than the worst thing they have done.

There is somebody struggling with their mental health who feels like everybody else received instructions for life that they somehow missed.

There is a father awake at night wondering how he is going to fix something that feels impossible.

There is somebody ashamed of their past.

Somebody who has been lied about.

Somebody grieving lost time.

Somebody who feels completely alone.

Somebody who has convinced themselves there is no way forward.

I wish I could sit down with every one of those people.

I cannot.

But maybe words can travel somewhere I cannot.

Maybe somebody finds one of these pages at two in the morning.

Maybe they recognize themselves in something I wrote.

Maybe, for five minutes, they stop believing they are the only person who has ever felt the way they feel.

Maybe they see a light they could not see before.

Maybe they notice a path that did not seem to exist yesterday.

That would be enough for me.

I do not want this to become something it is not

I do not have some enormous ambition for this blog.

I am not trying to turn it into something bigger than it needs to be.

I am not trying to make it about anybody else.

It is about me.

My thoughts.

My experiences.

The things I am learning.

The things I am trying to understand.

The things that have helped me become more peaceful, more thoughtful, more accountable, and more hopeful.

That is enough.

I do not need every piece to go viral.

I do not need thousands of people to agree with everything I write.

I do not need this to become a movement.

I would actually rather protect what makes it meaningful.

A quiet place where I can write honestly.

A place where I can create.

A place where I can process.

A place where someone who needs a little hope might happen to find some.

It does not need to become a spotlight.

A little light is enough.

Honesty matters more to me than looking perfect

If I am going to write here, I want to be honest.

Completely honest.

That sometimes means admitting things that do not make me look perfect.

I am okay with that.

I have always valued honesty and loyalty, sometimes probably to a fault.

I would rather tell the truth about myself than build something that depends on people believing I never made mistakes.

Because I did.

I have not always made the best decisions.

That is part of my life.

But it is not the whole thing.

Being honest about your failures does not erase the good in you.

And recognizing the good in yourself does not excuse your failures.

Both things can be true.

You can say:

I was wrong.

I should have handled that differently.

I wish I had known better.

I hurt someone.

I hurt myself.

I made a bad decision.

And still say:

I am learning.

I am changing.

I am trying.

I am still here.

That kind of honesty interests me much more than perfection ever could.

I want these words to create possibility

There is a particular feeling I hope somebody gets from reading something I write.

Possibility.

Not the fake kind.

Not somebody telling you everything is going to magically work itself out.

Sometimes things do not work themselves out.

Sometimes you have to work them out.

Sometimes you have to rebuild.

Sometimes you have to apologize.

Sometimes you have to ask for help.

Sometimes you have to walk away.

Sometimes you have to start over.

Sometimes you have to accept something you desperately wish were different.

Hope does not mean any of that disappears.

Hope means there may still be something on the other side of it.

A life you cannot see yet.

A person you have not become yet.

A relationship that has not been repaired yet.

A lesson you have not understood yet.

A morning you have not woken up to yet.

That is what I mean when I say I want someone to see a path that was not there before.

Maybe the path was always there.

Maybe pain just made it hard to see.

Sometimes a few words are enough to remind somebody to look again.

Keep going

If this blog stays small forever, I am okay with that.

If writing continues to help me find peace, it has already given me something valuable.

And if somewhere along the way one person finds something here that helps them get through a hard night, then it was worth putting these words into the world.

I mean that.

One person is enough.

Because I know what words can do.

I know they can hurt.

I also know they can reach into incredibly dark places.

They can remind somebody of something they forgot.

They can give a person one more reason to wait until morning.

One more reason to make a different decision.

One more reason to believe that whatever chapter they are living in right now is not necessarily the last one.

That is what I hope these words can be.

Not answers to everything.

Not instructions for somebody else’s life.

Just a small light.

Something that says there is still a path somewhere ahead, even if you cannot see very far down it yet.

And if somebody finds this site years from now on one of the worst nights of their life, there are three things I hope they understand before they leave.

You are not alone.

It is not over.

Keep going.

Author’s Note A little while after I started publishing these blogs, I came
